SRK brings baby AbRam home, says no gender test was done

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan Tuesday confirmed for the first time the premature birth of his and his wife Gauri Khan's surrogate baby boy, who has been named AbRam.

Shah Rukh, 47, made the news official about his surrogate baby via a statement.

"Amidst all the noise that has been going around, the sweetest is the one made by our newborn baby, AbRam. He was born prematurely by several months, but has finally come home," said Shah Rukh.

"Gauri and our whole family have been dealing with his health issues for a long time now," he added.

Explaining his longstanding silence on the matter, he said: "As a family, our silence on this subject has been because of the personal nature of emotional strife that we have been going through due to his health."

The superstar, also called the baadshah of Bollywood, also put the record straight that "there was no sex determination for our child".

"The baby was born much before the speculations of 'sex determination' and other 'issues' pertaining to the same were being raised in the media by some organisations. Suffice to say his coming home puts to rest completely false and at times insensitive claims of sex determination and alleged illegalities," he added.

On his part, the actor-producer has also apologised to "all those other doctors and hospitals who had to face unwanted scrutiny and questioning by some parties", and he has thanked the doctor concerned, Jatin Shah, for his expertise and contribution to make the surrogacy successful.

"We also wish to thank all the other doctors, nurses and medical staff who have made his life possible," added Shah Rukh, who also said the entire surrogacy process is bound by "strict confidentiality".

He has appealed to all "to allow us to cherish this private moment as a family".

Shah Rukh, who began his tryst with showbiz through the small screen in 1988, married Gauri in 1991. They have two children together - son Aryan,16, and daughter Suhana, 13.

Manisha Koirala to resume her work post cancer treatment

Filmmaker Rituparno Ghosh passes away at 49

Kolkata: Renowned filmmaker Rituparno Ghosh died at his south Kolkata residence this morning. He was 49.

The National Award winner was suffering from pancreatitis and died of a heart attack at 7.30 am, his family said.

He is credited with many critically acclaimed and National Award-winning films like Dahan, Utsab, Chokher Bali, Raincoat, Dosor, The Last Lear, Shob Charitro, Kalponik and Abohoman. He won the Best Director National Award for Abohoman last year. He has also won many international honours.

Ban Kamal, Rajini films: Lanka Buddhist group

Ravana Balaya, a Buddhist national group in Sri Lanka, has urged the National Film Corporation here to ban films starring actors Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Sarath Kumar and Vijay.

However, National Film Corporation chairman Asoka Serasinghe told The Hindu on Thursday that no official decision had been taken so far. “Yes, we did receive a petition from them. We have passed on the petition to the Ministry of Mass Media and Information, but no decision has been taken in this regard as yet,” he said.

According to reports in the local media, Ravana Balaya had given a petition to the Corporation over a month ago, expressing their opposition to screening Tamil films featuring the four stars.

Since they had not heard back from the Corporation, Ravana Balaya secretary Innekande Saddhatissa Thera met Mr. Serasinghe on Wednesday to reiterate the organisation’s demand.

Their demand intensified in April, in the context of actors in Tamil Nadu observing a fast in support of Tamils in Sri Lanka. Members of the organisation gathered outside the Public Performance Board (PPB) and theatres to press for a ban on Tamil movies from South India, The Sunday Times here reported.

Meanwhile, on April 11, several actors and technicians of the Sri Lankan film fraternity here appealed to their counterparts in Tamil Nadu to visit Sri Lanka and assess the post-war situation. The film industries of both countries shared a very healthy relationship promoting exchange of artistic and technical ideas, the actors had said, adding that they would never support a call for banning films made in Tamil Nadu.

Atoms star in world's smallest movie

Researchers at IBM have created the world's smallest movie by manipulating single atoms on a copper surface.

The stop-motion animation uses a few dozen carbon atoms, moved around with the tiny tip of what is called a scanning tunnelling microscope (STM).

It would take about 1,000 of the frames of the film laid side by side to span a single human hair.

The extraordinary feat of atomic precision has been certified by the Guinness Book of World Records.

It is a showpiece for IBM's efforts to design next-generation data storage solutions based on single atoms.

IBM's scientists have been behind a number of technologies that can peer into atomic and molecular systems - their recent efforts using a related machine called an atomic force microscope have yieldedpictures of single molecules and even images that detail the atomic bonds within molecules.

The new movie, titled A Boy and His Atom, instead uses the STM, an IBM invention which garnered the scientists behind it the 1986 Nobel prize in physics.

The device works by passing an electrically charged, phenomenally sharp metal needle across the surface of a sample. As the tip nears features on the surface, the charge can "jump the gap" in a quantum physics effect called tunnelling.

The 242 frames of the 90-second movie are essentially maps of this "tunnelling current" with a given arrangement of atoms. It depicts a boy playing with a "ball" made of a single atom, dancing, and jumping on a trampoline.

"The tip of the needle is both our eyes and our hands: it senses the atoms to make images of where the atoms are, and then it is moved closer to the atoms to tug them along the surface to new positions," explained Andreas Heinrich, principal investigator at IBM Research in California, US.

"The atoms hold still at their new positions because they form chemical bonds to the copper atoms in the surface underneath, and that lets us take an image of the whole arrangement of atoms in each frame of the film.

"Between frames we carefully move around the atoms to their new positions, and take another image," he told RTNN News.

The effort, detailed in a number of YouTube videos, took four scientists two weeks of 18-hour days to pull off.

It underlines the growing ability of scientists to manipulate matter on the atomic level, which IBM scientists hope to use to create future data storage solutions.

In early 2012, they demonstrated a means to store a digital "bit" - the smallest unit of information - using just 12 atoms, in contrast to the million or so atoms required by the device you are reading this on.

But A Boy and His Atom is, Dr Heinrich concedes, a bit of fun.

"This isn't really about a particular scientific breakthrough. The movie is really a conversation-starter to get kids and other people talking about - and excited about - math, science and technology."

P.B. Sreenivas leaves behind a treasure trove of melodies

It was a reality show hosted by S.P. Balasubrahmanyam for aspiring playback singers. One of the participants sang ‘Nilave ennidam nerungade’, and drew a huge round of applause.

But SPB asked him to sing the ‘Kodaiyil orunaal…’ stanza once again. And yet again. He was looking for a particular nuance in the line ‘Yen kolathil inimel ezhil varumo.’ The otherwise competent participant could not achieve that effect.

SPB then told the singer, “Listen to how he (PBS) renders the word kolathil… that effortless glide in the voice is trademark PBS.”

Somehow, one never thought of P.B. Sreenivas as someone from an older generation of artistes. He was often spotted in public — either having a cup of coffee at Woodlands Drive-In, which shut some years ago, or at a concert or function at Narada Gana Sabha, or judging a show on television.

His trademark headgear, shiny shawl, a bag full of books and a bunch of papers he held to his chest — made him stand out. When asked to speak at public functions, he would break into a song, usually penned by him for the occasion. That, for many of us, was PBS in the past 10-15 years. He did not let out too much about the phenomenal artiste he was.

My generation of Tamil film music fans grew up on a generous dose of Ilaiyaraja. Whether it was a classical music-based song, a catchy folk tune, an intense melody or a peppy number, his compositions had them all.

Despite that, there was something about the previous era of film music that repeatedly drew one to TMS, PBS and A.M. Raja. The three singers, along with P. Susheela and Jikki, defined a very crucial era in Tamil film music that was to survive the test of time, technological advancement and phenomenal talent that followed them.

The robustness in TMS’ voice, the melody-rich timbre in PBS’, and the rare finesse in A.M. Raja’s, took care of the entire spectrum of music appetite of listeners.

As a fan of film music, I have always felt PBS is to Tamil film music, what Rafi is to Hindi music. Having closely followed the music of his counterparts in other parts of the country, PBS brought in a contemporary flavour to his singing, which not only enhanced the appeal of his songs, but also made them highly fashionable and stylish in that era and for that matter, even now. The clarity he achieved in delivering the most subtle nuances can only be an outcome of great mastery of technique and a profound understanding of voice modulation.

My playlist of all-time favourites includes many of his songs such as ‘Kaalangalil aval vasantham’, ‘Mouname paarvaiyal’, ‘Roja malarae’, Paadada paattellam’ and ‘Ponnundru Kanden’. But there is one song that haunted me for days after the first time I heard it — ‘Thennankeetru oonjalile’ — penned by writer Jayakanthan. It showed PBS in a new light to me. The intensity with which he sustains a particular kind of lilt, in the very slow-paced song with elements of waltz music, was moving. After many years of listening to that song, I wonder how much thought the man would have put in to that song.

‘Aathoram manaleduthu’, the fantastic PBS-Susheela duet, is also a favourite. In the first instance, it may sound like a simple, cute number to teach children. But PBS packs a lot of emotion in each line of the song. He does so with a clear emphasis on melody, making it one of his most poignant numbers.

When he sang, the singing stood out more than the singer. And that was his biggest success as an artiste. PBS leaves behind a treasure trove of melodies — something fans like me will keep going back to all the time.

Suriya to work with Gautham, Lingusamy simultaneously

Tamil actor Suriya Sivakumar is set to work on his next two Tamil films, with directors Gautham Vasudev Menon and Linguswamy, simultaneously.

He is currently busy wrapping up upcoming Tamil action-romance Singam 2, a sequel to Tamil superhit Singam.

“As the Suriya-starrer Singam 2 is close to completion, the shooting of Suriya’s next movie with Gautam and Lingusamy are planned to be executed in parallel,” said a statement.

“Gautham’s project will start in June this year, while Lingusamy’s film will commence from August,” added the statement.

While the Suriya-Gautham untitled flick will be produced by Photon Kathas, the yet—untitled project with Lingusamy will be produced under the banner Tirrupathi Brothers.

This will be Suriya’s third film with Gautham, after superhits such as Kaakha Kaakha and Vaaranam Aayiram.
